astronomical and cosmological observations indicate that a large amount of the energy content of the Universe is made of dark matter. 

Particle candidates, under the generic name of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), arise naturally in many theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. 
The XENON experiment has just commissioned the construction of XENON1T at the Laberatori Nazionale Del Gran Sasso (LNGS).
XENON1T will be the first ton scale dual phase Time Projection Chamber Dark Matter direct detection experiment.
The high target mass and ultra low background will enable XENON1T to cover most of the theoretically favored supersymetric parameter space.
We present the principles of the detector, how we achieve such a low background, and some of the sophisticated ways of calibrating it
