The wonder and awe of the night sky is shared by peoples transcending geography, culture, and religion. Despite this reality, and the sacred stories that are rooted in each respective star lore, we often teach and learn critical elements of the sky through a single lens rooted in Eurocentrism and Greek mythology. In our multicultural and diverse world, we can aim to expand astronomy education to be more authentic and relatable for all students by designing curriculum from which they can locate themselves within. Through the inclusion of ethnoastronomy, as complementary to the already existing but limited astronomy curriculum, the sky can come alive and be a place to connect with others while mitigating the phenomena of othering that is prevalent across societal borders. This presentation will share teaching models and strategies, experiences, insights, and stories of using ethnoastronomy as a vehicle in education to connect people across cultures and religions, and highlight the challenges that manifest when walking this path.
